QuestionI have a very old ring that my Great Aunt got from Jostens when she worked there as a gift for working there.
It is gold and it has a big amethyst set in the middle.
I want to get it appraised, but am afraid to take it anywhere.
It has to be at least 50-65 years old, maybe more. Do you know of anyone who knows about Jostens jewelry?
AnswerTracy, the only way to get the ring properly appraised is to take it to a certified gemologist appraiser. You may fear leaving it with someone else for the time required to have the appraisal done but that is truly the only way.
Take a look at this website to see information on appraisal services:

I know the founder/owner of this company personally. Go down the page to the text link for CREDENTIALS.
You are going to need a person certified in valuation of jewelry items. This person will advertise with their credentials. You see, just being a jeweler does not make a person qualified to appraise jewelry accurately. Also, anyone who has been in business for some years and has good credentials wants t stay in business, something they cannot do if not trustworthy with the jewelry of another person.
Another possible alternative is to write Josten's. Go to the Internet, search for Josten's home site, contact the company and ask if they will provide information on the ring. I do not believe they will attempt to provide a value. You might get good information but not a written appraisal this way. Obviously, you will need a couple of good, clear photos to send them.
At this point, it is up to you how you proceed. Best wishes with the ring. : )
God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
