Identifying Real Amethyst: Tips to Spot Genuine Stone

Question
I wonder how to tell if my (antique/vintage) amethyst necklace is real stone or glass.  Can you give me a few tips on how to tell please.  I'd be most appreciative.

Answer
Hello,

Amethyst  usually has color zones.  You can see this better if you put the stone in a glass of water.  Glass can have round air bubbles in the stone and is more uniform in the color meaning there are no clear zones, there us color through out the stone.

The best way to know for sure is to have someone do a refractive index test.  Call around to some jewelers to see if they offer this service.
