Hi, I have a antique jade ring given by my mother. and it has a marking on the ring that read "GF". what can we tell from it? like year made? etc.

Hello Ora and thank you for your inquiry. The letters GF usually mean gold-filled when used with jewelry but there are usually other markings that accompany the initials i.e. 1/20 10K GF... The other possibilities are the initials of the wearer or designer/company. In order to determine the actual metal content, you would need to have it tested by a jewelry professional. They use an acid to determine whether the item is gold, gold plated or gold filled. They can test without doing any damage to the item. Finding the year made would be difficult unless you were sure the initials were those of a designer or manufacturer and then the time span could be as much as 50 years.
