Why Are My Gold Earrings Turning Black? Causes & Solutions

Question
Please advise if the studs of gold earrings should go black
I have tried to clean them and the black does not come off.
It is possible that the bearings are not gold

Answer
Lesley,

I'm not sure what part of the earring you are referring to, however, I have seen 14K gold earrings turn black at the base of the earring where it enters the ear and the post.  This happens to many people's earrings because of the acidity in our skin.  Since earrings are worn so closely to the body, with no air movement, and many people wear them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without taking them out, the PH of our skin can affect the color of the gold.  No, it does not come off in the cleaner, but typically it is on a portion of the earring that is not seen once you are wearing it anyway.

So, don't assume they are not gold just because they have turned black, and unless they are uncomfortable or irritating your ears, the black is nothing to be concerned about and is quite common.

Hope this helps you to feel better about them.
