Identifying Gold: Determining Metal Type of a Crucifix

Question
I have a crucifix statute that appears to be gold, it looks like there is some kind of laquer on it but underneath it looks like gold, how can I find out what type of metal it is?  It is very heavy, and looks like it was poured into a mold of some sort when it was made.  I need to find out the cheapest way possible!  Thank you!

Answer
Thanks for the question. Often with a lacquer coating, you are dealing with a base metal(costume jewelry metal) with a gold plate on the surface. Some metals used for costume jewelry are fairly heavy and are certainly made in molds.  Lacquer is to protect the finish.  Solid gold would not need any sort of lacquer finish.

The best way to find out is to take the item to a jeweler who will test the metal.  This test should not be  expensive at all but call a few store first!  There is a chance they can tell you right off from seeing the cross and the test may not need to be done.

I hope this helps.  Let me know if you need more info. Use the "follow-up" option if you need to get back with me. Thanks again!
