QuestionAll of the sudden my gold jewlery has started turning my fingers black-why? I have had these pieces for quite some time and this has never happened.
AnswerHello Aimee, Don't Panic, this is not unusual. The reason for the discolouration is due to an acidic reaction from your body pespiration with the alloy in the gold. The possible reason that it has only just started occurring could be due to the manner in which the articles were finished when made.
Sometimes manufacturers "Gild" or "Gold Plate" a piece after it has been polished to bring up the colour of the gold. Quite frequently the Gilding is a high carat, sometimes pure gold is used. It has the advantage of protecting the article from your pespiration, pure gold is unaffected by acid.
To counter this I would suggest that you consider two approaches, (1) Really clean your jewellery, use an old tooth brush, washing up liquid and plenty of hot water. Give it good scrubbing and this will take away any pespiration left on the jewellery and stop it from leaving marks on you and your clothes. (You can also obtain proper jewellery cleaning fluids). (2) Go to your nearest (Reputable) jeweller and ask him to get the jewellery professionally polished and finished in a good workshop this will also bring the colour back to your jewellery.
Hope this helps, Regards, Brian.
