QuestionHi,
I have seven gold chains all marked 14K. I was in need of cash so brought two of them to jeweler that I know. He told me that the chains were not gold at all. I asked him what they were but received no answer. I have owned these chains for many years, of course was not happy to sell them but as I said needed the cash. What could these chains be made of, my jeweler did not test them only looked at them and said they were not gold. I am confused and any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Regards & thank you..........
AnswerLaurie, there is a simple answer: Go somewhere else. If more than one other place says the chains are not gold, believe them. If they are purchasing gold, they will certainly want to buy it at below scrap rates so they can make a profit. This will not mean so much to you compared to the original price but when selling the chains are not thought of as jewelry but a scrap metal.
Sometimes, wear of gold filled or plated item is visible to the eye. I would have thought that would show to you from tarnish on skin or clothing. If not visible, a test would normally be done. However, if those wanting to buy gold will not buy it, that is your answer.
Could be the jeweler does not want to buy and would not say. I have no idea where the jeweler's thoughts are coming from. Could be the chains are not gold. Do as I suggested and you will find out soon enough. Fair enough to you?
Best wishes and my wish is the chains are as stamped, 14 karat. God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
