Resizing & Strengthening Gold Ring Shanks: A Jewelry Expert's Answer

Question
Hello,

Please can you confirm re. this question, as still unsure about understanding!  Thank you!

I have had a 9ct gold dress ring re-sized two/three times (due to weight going up and down), therefore, I think the shank has got thinner. If I had the ring made smaller again (as I lose weight), would the shank get thicker? Also is it possible for a jeweller to make the shank thicker or do they have to replace the entire shank?

Thank you,

Alison

Answer
Alison, I apologize for not answering completely the last time.

As for the shank becoming thicker if the ring is made SMALLER, it will be the same thickness as now but might "look slightly thicker" because the circle of the finger size is smaller in comparison. If the shank is thinner than you would like at the present size, when made smaller the shank will still be thinner than you would like. It does not get thicker.

A jeweler can replace a portion of the shank if needed, such as the bottom 1/3 section. Generally the entire shank does not need to be replaced.

(When made LARGER, the ring is either stretched to a larger size or a piece of metal is added at the bottom.  Stretching does indeed thin the shank. Adding a piece of metal should not make it thinner unless the jeweler does too much polishing on the area of the sizing.)

If the shank is thin now but not too thin, sizing down should go fine.
