Antique Greek Pendant: Athena & Pegasus - Origin & Value
Question
Front
My wife recently discovered this pendant in her mothers jewelry box. Her mom said that her brother brought it back from Greece, naturally it says "made in greece" on it. From what I understand, It's Athena on the front with a leather cap(?) and a bridled Pegasus on that back with wings curved up. I believe it's silver, but I'm not 100% sure. There are no other markings aside from "made in greece" on the back. If you know anything else about this, how old it may be, if it's worth anything -- it would be greatly appreciated.
AnswerHello Chris and thank you for your inquiry. You are right about the indications on the medal. These were popular souvenir items during the Victorian era c. 1840-1900 as well as later periods. A coin dealer might be able to give you an idea of the age of the "coin". I doubt that it is sterling, but you may want to have it tested by a jeweler. This type of jewelry enjoys a continued interest by collectors as well as fashion and jewelry buyers. As an added note, you might visit your local library or bookstore and look for coin or medal books. You may be able to match up your medal there. Hope this helps !\
