Identifying an Antique Barrel Clasp Bracelet - 1886 Era
Question
Old Bracelet
I found this behind a floor length mirror in the foyer of an old (1886) house my daughter just bought. We had to move this piece of furniture/mirror to clean and paint behind and this bracelet was just covered in what looked like 100 years of dirt! It is 7" long and has a unique clasp that actually screws together. I've discovered that this is called a barrel clasp. I was able to find what looks like an exact replica made by beadalon. Everything else looks like silver and mother of pearl. I thought the lighter pieces were made of mother of pearl but I've seen other similar ones that were carved of ivory. I don't think it's made of ivory as it has a sheen that reflects in the light. I'm no expert so if you have any questions please ask. Thanks, Dave
AnswerHello David and thank you for your inquiry. Your lovely bracelet is of the type that has been made for many years - a popular design using various beads and designs. Some included gemstone or ivory beads. Yours does look like mother of pearl and the metal beads may be sterling. Since there is no manufacturer or designer name on it, assigning a date would be difficult. The barrel clasp is still used today. My advice is clean with warm soapy water and enjoy !
