Engagement Ring Resizing: Is It Possible & Affordable?

Question
Hi Thomas, Thank you for being available to answer questions! I am embarrassed to post the ring I'm looking at but here it goes (below)...it is an inexpensive interim set until we get married and have our good wedding bands. However, it is still my first engagement ring so it matters. I'm sure others will be interested in what you have to say about this, haha.

It's a rhodium plated silver set with CZs. The smallest size they have it in is a 5. I wear a 4 1/2. Typing is an important part of my occupation so a ring that slips is just not wearable for me. Do you think this set could be resized the 1/2 size or would it make the CZs pop off? I would much prefer to have the ring fitted than to use other methods of keeping it placed...even though the money spent resizing it is probably about what it's worth haha. But it's my first and hopefully only engagement ring so I want to like wearing it more than anything else. Plus, I really like the style and know we couldn't get the real McCoy right now.

Thanks again for your help!!!

Nicole

Lastly, dare I ask...that if it could be done, would you do it and what would the charge be? Or if possible, please recommend someone. I'm in Orlando, FL but happy to ship it to a trusted jeweler. Many thanks!!

Answer
Nicole, first of all, do not be embarrassed.  Sure, some folks do have fancy expensive rings but some cannot and that is not important. What is important is that you get what you can afford now and that is the wise thing to do. What is more important is that you cannot put a price on love...no one could tell you how much the love is worth because you know it is priceless. The ring is a symbol of love and care; it cannot and does not say what your love is worth but it does say that love is real, no matter what the ring costs.

The ring is quite attractive. The size is a problem and unfortunately with rhodium plated sterling trying to change the size is not a good idea. First, to cut the metal to make it smaller means cutting through the rhodium plated layer and soldering the ring back together at a smaller size. Then the soldered area is sanded and polished.  This leaves a discolored area in most cases and in time the work area will tarnish like sterling does naturally.  The rhodium is to prevent tarnish but also prevents the ring from being properly sized down.

CZ stones can also be damaged by heat from soldering and most jewelers will not attempt to do the job for fear of breaking the stones. The stones should stay in ok with only 1/2 size down but the concern is breakage from the soldering heat.

My recommendation is not to have the ring sized.  I know the ring guards and items that slip into the ring band are not the best solution but that does keep the ring relatively steady on the finger and you don't have the problems of damage from sizing.  Believe me, as much typing as I do, slower than you I am sure, still I find rings to be a problem if tuned and getting in the way or distracting my fingers.

Nicole, I wish I could say go for the sizing but must recommend against it.  And, I do appreciate you thought of having me do the work but you have my recommendation and also for the time being I do not have a shop to work in!  That job closed not long ago.

You might check with jewelers for opinions about being able to do the work without damage to the stones. Even then, there will be some discoloration on the bottom where sized and it might tarnish in the future (tarnish can be clean off).  If you can live with the discoloration and the jeweler can do it without damage to the stones, you may decide to do that.

I wish I could help more or give a more positive answer.
God Bless and Peace to Both of You.   Thomas.
