Marriage and Child Support in New York: Will Marriage Increase Child Support Obligations?

Question
I am in a relationship and prepping for marriage but have a child from a previous relationship. My concern is my child support will rise if I get married. I live in New York State.

Answer
Hi Darnell~

No, it will not.  If you have a child with your soon to be wife, they'll have to leave you enough to afford things for the child to be as well.  And they also can't base anything off of your wife to be's income whatsoever.  Some ppl think this, but it's untrue.  The only way your child support will rise is if you get a considerable raise, then the mother of your child can take you back to court for an increase in your child support based on an raise b/c you're making more money.
