Newborn Vision: When Do Babies See Objects?

Question
At what time in a newborns life do they start to actually see objects and not just colors?

Answer
Hello Cathy. Of course no one really KNOWS what a newborn can see, we can only make guesses according to their responses to stimuli. A newborn can see black and white contrasting patterns the best. The baby is programmed to see the light and dark areas of a human face at about the distance of 12 inches- the average distance between it's face and that of it's mother when breastfeeding. A newborn can see at the moment of birth. Hope that helps- Cheri.
