Newborn Eye Drops: A History of Silver Nitrate vs. Erythromycin

Question
Dr,
I have a ongoing discussion about the composition of the eye drop given to the baby right after being born.

I read somethying about erythromycin.

I would like to know if at any time in the past silver clorhide or silver nitrate was used instead of erythromycin?

I appreciate to have your feedback

Thank you

Peter Koppany

Answer
For many years, silver nitrate (AgNO3) was used as prophylaxis against Gonorrhea in the newborn's eyes. Then, around 1982, it was decided that erythromycin did a better job and erythromycin has been used ever since. However, silver nitrate can still be used if preferred.
