Newborn Lung Health: Understanding Mucus & Phlegm

Question
When a baby is born with mucus or phlem in their
lungs whatdoes it mean? And what is the cause?

Answer
When a baby is born, lots of secretions that were in the uterus or vagina can enter the baby's mouth and can block the trachea. That is why we usually suction the baby within moments of birth (with a little bulb suction device). Then the baby is taken to a warmer and further suction is done with a suction catheter (from wall suction). This usually gets rid of any mucus or phlegm that may be in the trachea. Sometimes, some of this mucus, phelgm, or amniotic fluid can get past the vocal cords and get to the lungs.
