Hi, I am wanting a second opinion. My DR. is advising that I get a D&C & I just do not want to act too early. Is there ANY actual chance whatsoever that this could be a pregnancy that would work? Here's my test results:
Mon. April 5th, positive preg. test
HCG=64, Progesterone=16.8
Dr. says it's just early, retest to make sure.
So...
Thurs. April 8th:
HCG=168 didn't test prog.
Dr. says yep, everything's going great!
Next Mon. morning I wake up with a little blood when I went to the restroom. This was after a bowl movement & we'd had intercourse the morming of the day before (Sunday). After this initial blood, I called the doc. went in for a visit. He said"I'm not yet worried, lets repeat the blood work." So...
Now a week after the 1st test...Mon, April 12th:
HCG=240 & Prog.=10.5
(Hcg didn't double & prog. dropped)
Wed, April 14th:
Hcg=297 & Prog.=9.8
Sat, April 17th:
HCG=463 & Prog.=6.4
SO, WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS...If the prog. keeps dropping & the hcg not doubling is there any chance of everything going okay? I know what the #'s mean & that it doesn't look good, but I also know that some people's hcg just doesn't go up very fast & that they could still have a healthy baby. I wonder if it could just still be early & everything will all the sudden pick up & be fine.
I HAVEN'T HAD ANY CRAMPS, SOME SLIGHT BACKACHE MAYBE A LITTLE WORSE THAN NORMAL(my back hurts often anyway), & A VERY LIGHT TUGGING FEELING IN MY RIGHT SIDE. I HAVE HAD A FEW TIMES WITH A LITTLE MORE BLEEDING, MOSTLY ONLY VISABLE WHEN I GO TO THE RESTROOM. This is why I thought well, maybe it is okay...no real bad signs of miscarriage. I don't want to be over optimistic, but I also don't want to end this by my choice if there is some chance AT ALL that it could still work out. I totaly believe God can work miracles, but I don't want to be stupid about it either. I also believe that God can provide the doc. with the wisdom to keep me healthy. What do you think, is there any chance of me ruining a baby that could actually be okay? Is it going to for sure miscarry even though I have no real symptoms of miscarriage?

You did not mention when the first day of your last period was. I need to know that in order to determine how far along you are by dates. Certainly, if the HCG results are rising, there is still hope. HOwever, they are rising very slowly, and we have to consider that possibility of an ectopic pregnancy (tubal pregnancy) as well as an early intrauterine pregnancy. Please resubmit the question and let me know the date of the first day of your last period. If it has been more than 6 weeks since the first day of your period, you should take a sonogram to see if there is any gestational sac or fetus in the uterus, or if there are any unusual masses in the adnexa. If you are less than 5 weeks from your last period, you should wait.
I'M SORRY, THE FIRST DAY OF MY LAST PERIOD WAS MARCH 2ND. SO TODAY I AM 7 WEEKS PAST THAT. I WONDERED IF IT COULD'VE BEEN A LATE OVULATION OR SOMETHING. ALSO, MY DOCTOR SAYS THAT MY #'S ARE "TOO LOW" TO DO AN ULTRASOUND & SEE ANYTHING. ALL HE KEEPS SAYING IS "BETTINA, I AM CONFIDENT THAT THIS IS NOT A GOOD PREGNANCY." I WANT TO TRUST HIM, BUT SINCE I DON'T FEEL LIKE ANYTHING IS WRONG, I'M SCARED OF DOING SOMETHING TOO EARLY. I HAD ANOTHER BLOOD TEST TODAY & WILL KNOW THE RESULTS TOMORROW. I AM SCHEDULED FOR A D&C ON THURS. MORNING IF THE #'S STILL AREN'T GOOD. I JUST KEEP FEELING LIKE EVERYTHING IS FINE, BUT I DON'T KNOW IF THAT IS MY INSTINCT OR ME JUST REALLY WANTING IT TO BE FINE.

ALSO, IF THE HCG DOES KEEP GOING UP, IS THERE ANY CHANCE THAT THE PROG. WILL STOP FALLING & START RISING? DOES THIS EVER HAPPEN? OR WILL I FOR SURE MISCARRY IF THE PROGESTERONE GETS DOWN TO LOW OR TO "0"?

If you are really seven weeks past the first day of your last period, a sonogram should show a fetus and there should be a fetal heartbeat. If the HCG values keep going up I would definitely ask for a sonogram before havint a D&C done. If it shows no fetus, you may be too early in the pregnancy (your dates may be incorrect). The more important value is the HCG value, not the progesterone value. HOwever, if the HCG values are not rising adequately, you doctor may be right. I'm sorry that I can't be more help.
SORRY TO KEEP BUGGING YOU, BUT I WANT A SECOND OPINION.
HERE WERE THE RESULTS OF THE LATEST BLOOD WORK DONE TUESDAY APRIL 20TH. MY HCG ROSE TO 604 & THE PROGESTERONE DROPPED AGAIN TO 4.2. SO I WENT AHEAD & DID THE D&C ON THURSDAY.
NOW IT'S FRIDAY, I AM BARELY BLEEDING ANYMORE & MY DR.S OFFICE CALLED ME THIS AFTERNOON & SAID THAT THE LAB CALLED THEM & SAID THAT THE PATHOLOGY REPORT DID NOT SHOW ANY PREGNANCY TISSUE. THERE WAS HOWEVER TISSUE REMOVED. THE BLEEDING THAT I HAD YESTERDAY WAS BRIGHT RED, NO PAIN, NO CRAMPING!
THE NURSE SAID THAT THEY WILL PROBABLY SEND ME FOR ANOTHER BLOOD TEST ON MONDAY & IF THERE IS A RISE IN THE HCG AGAIN THAT IT'S PROBABLY TUBAL. I AM HAVING TROUBLE W/ THIS, B/C I DON'T THINK THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG. I JUST HAVE THIS FEELING THAT IT IS ALL OKAY. I UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEMS & CONCERNS.

I DO NOT WANT THIS DONE UNTIL THERE IS AN ULTRASOUND DONE! MY DR.S OFFICE IS TREATING ME LIKE I'M DUMB. THEY SAY THAT THERE IS JUST NO WAY THAT THIS IS A "GOOD PREGNANCY" & ACT LIKE IT IS FOR SURE DOOMED. WHEN I'VE READ OF CASES WHERE PEOPLE HAD LOW HCG THE WHOLE TIME & STILL HAD HEALTHY BABIES. I AM NOT STUPID OR TRYING TO BE OVERLY OPTIMISTIC. I JUST THINK THAT IT COULD POSSIBLY NOT LOOK "GOOD" & REALLY BE FINE. MY FAITH IS NOT IN #'S & TESTS, IT IS IN GOD. AnswerIf you had a D&C, you no longer have any chance of having a pregnancy in your uterus. If the HCG was going up, I would have waited a bit. It could have been a very early gestation. HOwever, once you have a D&C, the contents of the uterus are scraped out and the uterine cavity is cleaned. If no "chorionic villi" are seen on a pathology report or no tissue is identified as "products of conception", and you had rising HCG titers, it is possible that you have a tubal pregnancy. If a sonogram does not show any mass in your abdomen (on one side or the other) then it may have resolved. However, if the titers of HCG are still rising, it is possible that you do, indeed, have a tubal pregnancy and may need either surgery or medical treatment of the ectopic. Medical treatment is done by giving you Methotrexate to resorb the products of conception in your tube. Surgery is done either through a laparoscope where the tube is slit and the tissue is removed, or the entire tube on that side is removed. However, I'm afraid that once a D&C is done, there is nothing left in the uterus. I'm sorry.
