Understanding Fluctuating HCG Levels in Early Pregnancy

Question
I'm 8 weeks and 3 days along.  On 12/25 my HCG was at 356, on 12/26 HCG was at 575, 12/29 was 1,500, 01/10 my HCG was at 22,000, and then on 01/12 all of a sudden my HCG was at 3,895.  I read one of your Q and A's and you said it should halve every 48 hours.  Mine more than halved.  Do you think this could be a lab error?  My baby had a strong heart beat on 01/10 when then did an U/A and then they did a repeat U/A on 01/12 and there was still a strong heartbeat and my cervix was still closed she said. They called this a threatened miscarriage and that is what they also called it on 01/10.  I've read at 10-11 weeks your HCG level will start to drop a little but I'm not quit there yet.  I've had some spotting and a little bit of bleeding but nothing horrible.  Do you think I am in the process of a miscarriage?

Answer
Dear Mellisa

At 8 weeks gestation calculated from your last period, hCG should not be less than 7000. However you mentioned it was 3895 on 1/12 and at the same day u had a reassuring ultrasound. Although this is a little confusing, nothing can be mentioned if this pregnancy is going to continue or abort.

Assuming this is a threatened abortion, the only thing you can do is to have complete rest and avoid intercourse, excecising, lifting heavy objects and have a repeat ultrasound in 1 week.

Good Luck
