QuestionHi, I just had my first ultrasound on Monday 11/14. My last period started on 9/1, so the doctors were estimating that I was about 10-11 weeks along. No heartbeat was detected and the nurse told me the size of the fetus looked more like a 6 week, not 10-11 week. The doctors told me there was a chance that I had just ovulated late and they were wrong about the timeline, so they wanted to run 2 blood tests, 2 days apart to check HCG and progesterone levels.
Monday 11/14 HCG 67,000
Wednesday 11/16 HCG 60,000
Progesterone was same for both tests and "good" but I don't remember the number.
B/c of the ultrasound results and the fact that the HCG went down, doctor is saying that this will be a miscarriage and I can elect D&C if I want.
I have no symptoms of miscarrige--no spotting, no cramping, no bleeding. I still have pregnancy symptoms, nausea, swollen and tender breasts, etc.
Is a pregnancy always destined to miscarry if HCG goes down?
I need to know before I make a decision about D&C.
Thank you.
AnswerIf your last period started on September 1, you should now be 11 weeks gestational age. A sonogram at this time should show a fetus and a fetal heartbeat. Your HCG values should double every 48 hours as well. At 11 weeks, the HCG values range from 10,000-100,000. However, if your HCG results are dropping, it is not a good sign. Even if the sonogram showed a 6 week uterus, you should have seen a fetus and a fetal heartbeat. If you still have doubts, repeat the sonogram in a week. If there still is no heartbeat, I would suggest emptying the uterus via D&C.
