Understanding Fetal Diagnostic Imaging Report: What Do the Results Mean?

The report states ... There is a visualization of a three chambered heart.  There is a two vessel cord.  The fetal stomach was not visualized at the present study and acidic fluid is seen in the abdomen There also appears to be pericardial fluid.  ... My friend is 21 weeks and she just got this report back ... what does this mean? and what is the chance of survival for the baby?   Thank you

Hello Kelly- IF the scan results are accurate, this baby may have some big proglems and the pregnancy may not carry to term. However, you need to know that I have known MANY such scan reports that prove completely wrong once the child is born and no one can figure out why. U/S is highly over used and I have very little faith in it. I encourage your friend to eat only the highest quality of foods and accept whatever the outcome may be- there is really little else she can do. Of course someone MAY suggest that she terminate the pregnancy but if this is based solely on u/s, she needs to think very carefully. Cheri.
