Phytoestrogens After Mastectomy: What Survivors Need to Know

Question
My mother had a mastectomy on Jan 3 of this year, she is 63 and there is no other course of treatment, other than tomoxifen.  Her nodes were fine, and she had a cat scan that was good too.  She was recently told to stay away from foods containing phytoestrogens.  I tried to find a list of foods to stay away from and only got further confused.  It seems that there are atleast 3 types of phytoestrogens, and there was a lot of info both for and against it being included in a survivors diet.  I am wondering how to determine which phytoestrogens are good or bad, and which she should and should not eat.  A side note, my mother suffers from the beginning stages of macular degeneration, and is advised by her eye doctor to eat lots of broccoli to help maintain her sight, yet this seems to contain lignan phytoestrogen, so this complicates things further.

Answer
Dear Catherine,   I'm sorry, it is early and I clicked on the WRONG button.....

I would STRONGLY suggest that you take your mother and you to the local hospital and set up an appointment to talk to the Dietician at the hospital....  These people are TRAINED in their profession on KNOWING exactly what people should and should not eat with the current medical condition and medications....  There you will get a list of foods to stay away from and any other information that has to do with her eating all tht broccoli and phytoestrogens....

thank you,   karen
