Understanding Repeated Mammograms & Ultrasounds for Breast Lumps

Several years ago I found a lump in the upper right of my
left breast.  I have had three mammograms since then.  After
each mammogram, I have been sent back for a diagnostic mammo
and ultrasound.  The lump has been unchanged in the first
two.  I am supposed to go in Monday for the last one.  Why
do they keep ordering the same tests each time, when they
are not concerned after the initial tests?  Should some
other test be ordered?  Are there other options?  Thank you.

They are checking it to see if there is any change since such a change may indicate that it is dangerous. I think a needle biopsy of your lesion should be done (it can probably be ultrasound guided) to find out what your lesion really is. That way we will KNOW what it is and if not dangerous - which is probable - that particular lesion will not need to be checked specially any more - though you will still need new mammographies in order to check your breasts in general. So demand this! Good luck!
