Missing Period While on Birth Control: Causes & What to Do
QuestionI am 28 years old with no children and my last period was around the 12th of June. I have been on the pill pretty consistently since I was 21. Lately over the last few months they have gotten lighter, lasting about 5-6 days. This month I did not have anything. I did take a pregnancy test that was negative (drug store kind). I also was taking ginseng prior to that for about 3 weeks. My family doctor has told me before that some people that are on the pill for a long time may end up not having much of a period because the lining gets so thin, that there is nothing to pass. But you would think that there is always something? I am not sure what to expect after being on the pill for so long, but I don't want to worry every month if I am not having a period. How long is it safe to stay on the pill? Is it a good idea to have another pregnancy test done or are the ones that you buy reliable? If you have any thoughts that would be great! Thank you very much.

AnswerWhen you have been on the pill for awhile, it is very common (and acceptable) to have a period that is shorter. (Even if it lasts only 1 hour or 1 day.) You can stay on the pill for your entire life until you reach menopause. However, if you do not get y8ur period at all, you have to rule out pregnancy. If your last period started on June 12, and you have not had your period yet, the best time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after missing your next period. You were due for your period on July 9. Therefore, a pregnancy test taken after July 16 will be accurate. If it is hegative after July 16, then you are not pregnant. If you do not get your period in August, call your gynecologist.
