Newborn's Delayed Eye Opening: Potential Causes & Concerns

Question
Thank you so much for all your help and support. I really appreciate it. I have one last question...could inhalation of fertilizer and/or sulfur be the cause of all his problems?

Thank you
Rachel

Question -
My nephew was born 4 days ago and has not opened his eyes yet. They are very swollen and he experineced a lot of trauma during labor. His vital signs are fine but why is it taking so long for him to open his eyes? I am really concerned.
Answer -
Hello Rachel. Because of the trauma to his face and swollen eyelids, he CAN'T open his eyes. When the swelling subsides, he will open them. Meantime, be sure you are talking to him- he has been listening to the English language inutero for many months now, and he can understand a LOT of what is said to him. Help him understand that the discomfort he may be feeling due to the bruising and the frustration of not being able to open his eyes, will pass soon. I sure hope he is being breastfed because that will  speed his healing. All the best-Cheri.

Answer
Hello again Rachel. Well, that is a question best asked of the geneticist, he/she would have a great deal more info than I about the effects of various chemicals. I think, however, that an actual chromosome abnormality is not caused by outside chemicals- it is an inborn anomoly over which we have NO control. The parents will want to be tested further themselves to determine if future children could also be born with this defect and if so, what are the chances. I wish your family all the best and please keep a close eye on those parents- they are going to need lots of TLC and support no matter what the outcome. Cheri.
