Question Hello,
I just found out 3 days ago that I am indeed preg. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever expect this. I have 3 children ages 19,17,&13. My question is what concerns should I have with my age? And also I had a tummy tuck 8 yrs. ago with the permenent stiching of my muscles. I have heard this couls cause my utures to not grow as large as it should and in turn cause a small baby or even premature birth. I am 5 weeks today and am already feeling those sharp pains down the sides of my belly when I cough, sneeze or stand quickly.
Thanks for your help!
Cheri
AnswerI am not an expert on the effects that a tummy tuck can, and can not have on a subsequent pregnancy. However, I do not believe this could negatively impact uterine, fetal growth, or premature birth. You should contact the surgeon who did the procedure to discuss if there are any ramifications.
The best course of action for both you and your developing baby is to maximize your health! Get at least 30 minutes of moderate level aerobic exercise, like fitness walking, every day. Maternal exercise has been shown to offer TREMENDOUS benefits to the both of you.
Here's a run down...
Maternal Benefits:
Stronger immune system
Reduction in common pregnancy aches and pain
More energy and physical stamina
Improved self esteem
Better sleeping patterns
Less fat gain
Shorter labor and delivery
Fewer labor interventions, including "C"s
Drastically lower risks such as gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia
Baby Benefits:
Stronger cardiovascular system from birth onward
Stronger immune system
Leaner at birth
Better digestion, including glucose regulation from birth
Smarter from birth
Overall better health for life
You should also eat the highest quality diet that you can afford, in the right amount for your metabolism. If you haven't started already, take a daily prenatal vitamin.
The sharp pains on the side of the belly is due to stretching of the round ligaments. To relieve pain, perform the "Hip Hiker" exercise. Place one hand on a countertop for balance. Stand on one foot (on the non painful side) and then lift the hip of the painful side closer to your armpit. This takes the pressure off the round ligament.
