Understanding Nuchal Translucency & Brain Development in Early Pregnancy

Question
I am 34 years old, first pregnancy [in virto fertilization], currently
13 weeks

My husband and I went for our Nuchal
Translucency test last week [at 12 weeks].  It
did not look suspiscious for Downs
Syndrome, thank God.  We will find results
later this week.  However, when the
technician scanned other parts of the fetus
and came across the brain something
struck us as odd.  The left side was not
symmetrical to the right side. It seemed as
though the left cavity was filled in with a
black mass and the right side was "half full".
Is this something we should be concerned
about?
Is this just normal development and
things take time as I am now only 13 weeks?
Or was it jus a strange vantage point of the
sonogram that couldn't actually get a true
reading of the cavities?

Thank you!

Answer
At 13 weeks gestation, it is really too early to get a good sonographic visualization of the fetal brain. YOu can get a better report after your next sonogram at 20 weeks. That will show you the brain, the outflow tracts of the heart, and all the organs. Wait until then. Don't worry.
