Postpartum Bleeding: What to Expect & When to Worry

Question
I gave birth 2 months ago and im still bleeding its not heavy but its annoying it will stop for a day or 2 and then start back up. Is this normal? What should I do? I am taking daily birth control will that effect it?

Answer
Dear Nikky,

The bleeding after delivery is called lochia. Postpartum bleeding is similar to the bleeding that occurs during a menstrual period, but is often much heavier than menstrual bleeding for the first few days. Postpartum bleeding typically begins within hours after giving birth, and will continue for about 2-3 weeks. For some women, postpartum bleeding may last for up to as many as 6 weeks after giving birth. If you are on the BCP, the hormones in the pills should have actually started regulating out your cycles by now and given you some relief from the constant bleeding. I would suggest that you let your doctor know that you continue to experience light bleeding almost every day - even since starting the BCP. This may be able to be treated very easily with a medication change or he/she may give you something to kick-start your cycles, and thus the normal hormonal chain of events.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
