QuestionI am 31 years old, have 3 children - 15, 11, and 4. I don't remember my last period. I have been on depo for years, approx 10. I stopped with my third child, it took me almost a year to get pregnant with her. After her, I continued to get depo shots but since I was not active, I rarely did so on a 3 mo schedule. I usually waited till right before or right after I started bleeding again, which was 1 - 2 months later before getting another shot. I went off the depo shot for about 4 or 5 months after supposed to get one and then I got another shot in April. I did not go back in 6 weeks like the dr wanted for another shot, and I have not gotten one since then. I have been sexually active since April and now I am having some symptons of pregnancy, I think. I am crying at the least little thing, I am more moodier than usual, I have not started bleeding again and I should have gotten the shot 2 months ago at the latest, I have slight cramping at times, although it doesnt feel as bad as pre-menstrual cramps, I feel naseause at times, thinking about food sometimes makes me queesy, sometime after eating I feel sick, I am going to the bathroom more often, I cannot sleep as well, meaning I get up at night more often, and I have this funny feeling in my stomach, like anxiousness or something alot. I have taken a few pregnancy tests, most were negative, one had a faint blue line. Also, the only times I have ever passed out were when I was pregnant and I almost passed out the other day. Is it possible to be pregnant? Even without having another period?
AnswerIt is always possible to be pregnant, even if you did not have a period. One of the problems with DepoProvera is that it can cause complete cesation of the period, or it can cause irregular periods, or it can cause unpredictable bleeding at various times of the month. Even if you do not get your period, you may, indeed, ovulate and can become pregnant if have have sex at the right time of the cycle. If you have any doubts or if the pregnancy tests you took are consistently negative, take two blood tests for pregnancy (Beta HCG). If there is a doubling of the results in 48 hours, you are pregnant. If the results are less than 5, you are not pregnant.
