Post-Miscarriage Pregnancy: HCG Detection & Next Steps

Question
Hello.
My husband and I recently miscarried on or before July 14th.
We certainly want to try to conceive as soon as possible and have had unprotected sex within a week of the incident.
For the past few days I have taken home pregnancy tests and they are resulting positive. Could this be detecting the hcg from the previous pregnancy. At time of miscarriage I was 4 weeks.
Also, should I test again and compare the intensity of the results? Your help and/or advice is greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hello, Chris,

It is remotely possible you are pregnant again, but it is unlikely you would get a positive pregnancy test so soon. You could also have gotten pregnant with another child before the miscarriage happened. This can happen if the first baby is already in trouble. It is rare, but I know of two cases. On the other hand, miscarriage usually happens because there are insufficient hormones to sustain a pregnancy, so it is unlikely that your hCG is from the baby you lost. Another thought comes to mind. You might have been carrying twins, and one of them survived. Testing again in a week to see if the test is stronger is a good idea. On this one, I suspect you will have to wait and see what happened. I would love to find out when you do! So please let me know. Take care!
