Depo Provera Side Effects: Back Pain, Cramps & Other Symptoms

Question
Hi Kristy...
Well, I've wrote to you before, but that was a while back. Now i'm in a different situation. Just recently, like 3wks ago, I rcv'd my first depo provera shot. since then, I've been experiencing very bad back pain and cramps and twinges in my abdomen, mostly lower. I have been urinating frequently, delayed bowel movements w/constipation, dizzy/lightheaded w/headaches that come and go..twinges and slight cramping in my breasts, which have also enlarged and feel a bit heavier...and also, i've been easily irritated lately....and let's not forget the extreme fatigue....the last time i experienced all these at one time was when i was pregnant with DD who passed on this past August due to prematurity from an IC. Anyways...at first i thought these were side effects from the shot...then i really started feeling pregnant. so i decided to go and buy a test, and two came back faint positive..one darker than the other...b/c i wasn't truly convinced, i went out and bought a name brand..the 2 tests in the box came out negative...so i was confused. i went to see the dr about the symptoms and the results of my findings....and told me that i could be experiencing all these symptoms, each from different reasons...in the back of mind, I was a little disappointed with the answer. I have never had all these at one time except during pregnancy. I still feel pregnant as I wait for the blood test results to confirm...I just wanted to know what you might think of all this..Also could i be experiencing ALL of these symptoms from low iron? I'm going crazy.....Thanks in advance..
Jenn

Answer
Hi Jennifer :)

Its very possible that the effects your are feeling, simply could be an effect from the depo shot. Again, hormonal changes will occur, and when that happens, often they can mimic pregnancy symptoms to a tee.

However, you did say you had positive pregnancy tests. Even if the second line is faint, this still is positive. The reason why the line is faint, is most likely because its a possible early pregnancy and the HCG levels are just weak. However, keep in mind that different pregnancy tests, require different levels of the hcg to register. Its always essential to test in the morning, when your urine is more concentrate. If you are pregnant the HCG level will be more prominate, and give you an accurate result. Often, ladies will test during the day, after having a intake of fluid. This causes the urine to be diluted, and will perhaps cause a false negative result.

Very rarely, will you have a false positive. And extremely rare that you would get 2 faint positive tests. Because you had the positive tests, I think you are most likely pregnant. This would also, answer for those symptoms as well. If you were not pregnant, ALL tests, would have been negative, no doubt about it.

Again, I dont think your symptoms are a result of low iron. Fatigue is often a symptom of low iron, but would in now way cause breast tenterness, twinges, or cramping.

Hope this answers your question, and if you have any more concerns, please write back!

Would you please let me know your test results, from the doctor? I would love to know!

Take care,

Kristy
