Understanding Peri-Gestational Bleeding & Early Pregnancy Concerns
QuestionI had a miscarriage in Jan 04 and am about 6 wk pregnant. I had very mild spotting mostly brown and after an early ultrasound I was told by the nurse that I had a small peri-gestational bleed, which was sac of blood that should resolve on its own. The ultrasound was at 5 wks 5dys and showed a gest sac and yolk sac but nothing else. My numbers are steadily doubling every 48 hrs but my progesterone dropped slightly, was still at 15. Should I be concerned about miscarriage? I can't find any info on just the progesterone dropping with HCG still doubling and this bleed they told me about. They did put me on prometrium 300mg a day and I am having the bloodwork and ultra redone this week.
AnswerSo far, everything appears O.K. Your HCG values are doublinig every 48 hours, indicating a viable pregnancy. Your progesterone level is not too low and the progesterone supplementation is a good idea. It is common not to see anything except an empty gestational sac between 5-6 weeks from your last period. If you repeat the sonogram after 6 weeks, you should see a fetus and a fetal heartbeat. It is also common to have a "subchorionic bleed" that usually resolves on its own and does not interfere with the pregnancy at all. However, there still is a 15-20% chance of miscarriage (with every pregnancy), but you can't do anything to cause that and you can't do anything to prevent that. Good Luck to you. Be patient.
