Faint Positive Pregnancy Test & Bleeding: What Could It Mean?

Question
I took a home pregnancy test and it showed a very faint positive.  About 2 hours later we took a urine test at the doctors office which was also faint but said I was pregnant.  Later that day I started bleeding.  We had a blood test, ultrasound, and internal pelvic exam.  The blood test showed that my hormone level was 56.  My ultrasound did not show any signs of pregnancy.  And the pelvic exam showed that my cervix was still closed.  Two days later I had another quant test which showed my hormone level was at 8.  Now the doctor wants to do another test to see where my levels are at.  Is it possible that I may still be pregnant and never miscarried? If so, is that rare?

Answer
Dear Melissa,

It sounds like the likelihood is that the pregnancy never got a real strong start. Given all the information you've shared, if the quant level fell from 56 to 8 after the bleeding occurred, I would suspect that you probably had a very early miscarriage. It would be more than rare for the quant level to have fallen that much and that low and still be pregnant.

I hope that this has helped you and answered your question. I apologize for the slight delay in answering this week...needed to put my grandma hat on for a few days. I wish you well.
