QuestionHi
I was wondering what the likelihood is of my getting pregnant...my husband and I had a condom fall off today. It is day six of my cycle and I am still bleeding very slightly from my period. My cycle is not always exactly regular: I get my period about every four weeks usually, but sometimes a little sooner. I think the amount of semen that would have leaked out of the condom would be pretty small.
I am a bit worried about this because a similar incident at the end of a menstrual period led to me getting pregnant wih our daughter! Of course I have no regrets but I don't want another baby right now!
So i guess my question is: how long does sperm usually 'live' for, and would it be enough time for me to ovulate and get pregnant? If I went on the pill tomorrow would this prevent ovulation in time, or should I avoid the pill unless I am sure I am not going to become pregnant? Are there any pre-emptive measures I can take to avoid ovulation?
I should add that I am a Catholic and while I have no issues with contraception, I prefer to avoid the morning after pill for religious reasons (as it does not prevent conception but only implantation).
Thank you so much, a quick reply would be most appreciated!
AnswerIf you have a regular 28 day cycle (from the first day of your period until the first day of your next period) ovulation occurs on cycle day #14. YOu can only become pregnant if you have unprotected sex on cycle day #13, 14, 15, or 16. If you had sex on cycle day #6, it is highly unlikely that you could have conceived because it was too early for you to have ovulated at that time. Sperm can live for 12-24 hours and an egg can remain viable for 24-48 hours. That is why you can conceive if you have sex one day prior to ovulation and up to two days after ovulation. It is too late to avoid ovulation for this month, but I doubt that the sperm will remain viable from cycle day #6 until the time you ovulate, especially if you normally have a period every four weeks. Don't worry.
