Question -
I am 17 and don't have children. My last period started on march 15th. On which days of your menstral cycle can you get pregnant? i was told once but i couldn't remember i think i heard something like days 13-16 but i'm not sure. Also, when do you start counting? How many days are in the cycle? When is your last day?
Answer -
A normal cycle is counted from the FIRST DAY of your period to the first day of your next period. If you have a normal 28 day cycle (from the first day of one to the first day of the next) ovulation occurs on cycle day #14. You can ONLY become pregnant if you have  unprotected sex on cycle day #13,14,15, or 16 each month. Start counting on the first day that you see bleeding (cycle day #1) A cycle is normal if it is between 21-35 days. We never worry about the last day of your period. Only keep a record of the first day of your period. If you do become pregnant on one of the days I mentioned above,a pregnancy test will not show a positive result until 14-21 days later. The best time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after missing your next period.
Answer -
If you have a cycle that is longer or shorter than 28 days, ovulation occurs 14 days PRIOR to the first day of your next perid. That makes it difficult to determine when, exactly, ovulation occurs. You can purchase an ovulation predictor kit from the pharmacy or get a ovulation monitor try to pinpoint the day of ovulation. Once you calculate what day you ovulate, you can conceive if you have sex 1 day proiot to ovulation and up to two days after ovlation.

Answer
You can ONLY become pregnant around the day of ovulation.
As I mentioned before, if you have a regular 29 day cycle, ovulation occurs on cycle day #14 and you can only conceive if you have sex on cycle day #13, 14,15, or 16. However, if you have a longer or shorter cycle, the day of ovulation occurs fourteen days prior to the first day of your next period. In other words, if you have a 30 day cycle (from the first day of your period until the first day of your next period) ovulation occurs 14 days prior to cycle day #30, or on cycle day #16. Then you could get pregnant if you have sex on cycle day #15,16,17, or 18 each month. If your cycle is irregular and changes every month, you will have to have your cycle regulated for a few months in order to be able to calculate when you ovulate and when to avoid sex to prevent pregnancy. Your health teacher is incorrect. You can ONLY become pregnant if you have unprotected sex one day prior to ovulation and up to two days after ovulation.
