Understanding Ovulation and Conception After Provera Use
QuestionHi! I had a miscarriage at 9wks and had to have a d&c on April 15,2008. I waited about 8wks post d&c and called my md because I never started a cycle. We waited until week 11 post d&c and they started me on Provera 10mg for 10 days to induce a cycle. I ended the provera on Friday(6/27) and I still have not started. I know it has only been three days but my two questions are: 1. Will I still ovulate this cycle after my period-is there a chance of conceiving? 2. Is it true there is a strong chance for multiple pregnancies after provera?
I got pregnant the first try my husband and I tried to conceive, there was something wrong with the babys heart which is why there was a heart beat for the 1st two ultrasounds. We were wondering this because we both have twins on each side of our families.(Grandparents on both sides and my mom's brother & sister). So we do know that everything "works" just fine it is just being sure the baby is safe and healthy. I never came off my prenatals. I am 27 yrs old. I hope this is enough information. Thank you in advace for your help.
AnswerDear Jillian,
Provera is not a medication that is typically associated with multiples. Provera is simply synthetic progesterone - a hormone already produced by your body and necessary for the menstrual cycle to get into that rhythmic pattern - and thus trigger ovulation. If you would happen to conceive twins, I would say that will be related much more to your family history than an association with any medication.
I cannot say whether you will absolutely ovulate with this cycle or not. It really depends upon what is causing the delay in the start of your menstrual cycles to date - especially after the full course of the Provera. My recommendation would be to see (or at least call) your doctor if you do not start a period this week. They may very well want to do a quantitative blood pregnancy test to make sure you have not conceived another pregnancy after your D&C, which would explain the absence of a period since then.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
