Metrogel Safety in First Trimester: Risks & Considerations

Question
Hi

During my first gyn visit in 8th week, the doctor diagnosed myself for bacterial vaginosis and prescribed Metrogel (0.75% metrodinazole vaginal gel). The nurse from doctor's office called us and said that the medicine have been prescribed and not to worry as it is safe during pregnancy.

I took the medication and recently saw some reports on net suggesting Metrogel is no safe during first trimester.I am very concerned now.

Is it really safe to take in first trimester of 9weeks? Now I am in 13th week and really concerned about my baby.

Sometimes, I am so worried that I think of termination.

Did the doctor did the right thing?.She is very young and newly graduate. She is board eligible in Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She is on staff at certain hospitals.

Currently I changed to another experienced doctor in the same clinic.

Please advise how to proceed. Is this medical malpractice? What other precautions or tests or alternatives I have to make sure my baby is safe?

When I can be sure that metrogel havenot affected my baby? During 5th month ultrasound or 2 yrs after birth?

Age:26, first pregnancy

Answer
HI Vanis,
actually reports are conflicting however our colleagues here use it as well as long as you and the baby are montitored closely as with ultrasound as normal, it should be fine. Just take it for the length of time needed and then stop and be tested again to see if the infection is gone. Don't terminate or think about it, because it takes alot of any medication to hurt a baby. And this is NOT lawsuit material in any way.
