UTI in Pregnancy: Risks and What to Expect

Question
My bestfriends' girlfriend is pregnant and her body is not responding (immuned) to the antibiotics and said that the infection is getting worse. I've tried looking up what harm it could cause but couldnt' find anything. what could happen to the baby if the infection isn't gotten under control. She is about 8 weeks.. thank s

Answer
HI Pamala,

They need to get this under control, there will be some medicine she can take that will stop the infection. UTI are very common during pregnancy.

The bacteria wont necessarily cause harm to the baby itself, the baby is very well protected, but for the mother, the infection is dangerous if not controlled, and THAT will affect the baby if the infection gets seriously out of control.

The mother can start running fevers, become anemic, and the infection can spread to kidneys etc if not handled, so I am sure the doctors will give her stronger meds. The baby will be fine.
