Heat Exposure in Early Pregnancy: Risks and What to Do
QuestionI am about 5 weeks pregnant and found myself in a situation where I was outside in the heat for a little over an hour in 112 degree weather. I stayed hydrated, but became very flush and had to cool down by pouring water on my head and back. Could this affect my pregnancy?
AnswerThis will probably not cause any harm to the baby or to the pregnancy, and you did the correct thing by pouring water on your head and back. This will not hurt the baby, but can cause yoo to have heat prostration. We know that being in a hot tub for too long at 110 degrees F, can cause damage to the skeletal muscles of the baby as well as cardiac muscle defects. However, just heat of 112 degrees F in the aird, does not cause a problem. I would tell your doctor.
