QuestionHi. I read the answer to the girl's question about BV at 12 weeks of pregnancy. So I understand that Metrogel is safe, but I never really hear anyone say anything about taking it in the first trimester. I am only concerned because my OB won't let me take cream for yeast during the first trimester. I guess I'm a bit nervous. But MISERABLE and have some metrogel from before pregnancy that I could use until getting to my doctor.
AnswerDear HD,
Metrogel can be used in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters for treatment of BV, however treatment is not usually done in the first trimester, when fetal organs are developing.
Another consideration for you is - the vaginal form of these antibiotics for BV, like Metrogel, actually have vaginal yeast infection as the most common side effect! If you have a yeast infection, this would be a REALLY bad idea.
Truly, no vaginal medication should be used right now - especially not Metrogel if what you have is yeast. All I can really recommend until your doctor will allow you to use a cream or suppository is keeping the genital area very dry (initially it may cause a bit more itching, but the yeast needs moisture to grow). It can even help to use a blow dryer on a low/cool setting after regular thorough washing - with common sense of course, not directly into vagina, just holding about 10-12 inches out to dry area well. :-) Include yogurt with "lactobacillus acidophilus" in your diet and also limit your sugar intake, as sugar promotes the growth of yeast. And always wipe from front to back after using the restroom.
I empathize! I don't know that there is much worse than a raging yeast infection. It would put most men in a coma! :-) I'm hoping you can get into the doctor soon. I hope I've helped answer your question and I wish you well.
