Constipation Relief During Pregnancy: Safe Laxative Options & Concerns

Question
I have a severe problem with constipation, always have even before I became pregnant.  Now of course it is worsening.  I have tried all the fiber/bulk products and they dont work.  The only thing that works is stimulat laxatives (correctol).  I have to take them about twice a week, and hear that its not good on the baby, that it can cause a misscariage as well as the baby feeling cramping once the laxatives kick in.  I have been to my doctor since Ive been taking them and the baby seems to be ok, but then again I am only 16 weeks.  What harm do the laxatives cause the baby, and what should I do?  Thank you so much for your time, I deeply appreciate it.

Answer
There have not been any adverse effects seen with the use of laxatives during pregnancy and they are all category C medications. They have not been reported to cause an increase in the miscarriage rate nor do they cause any malformations or adverse effects in the baby or to the pregnancy. If you are having difficulties with constipation, I would suggest that you ask your doctor for Colace as a stool softener, as a first step before you use a stimulant laxative.
