Copper IUD & Delayed Period: What to Know

Question
I hope you will be able to answer my question.
I am 24 years old and I use a 10 year Copper IUD as form of birth control. I have had it almost 5 years and have never had a problem. I get my annual exams and have never had any problems. I recently missed my period. (I did miss a period aprox. 3 years ago and was tested for various things and all was negative. And I started having normal periods again therafter.) Currently I am 13 days late. I took a pregnancy test today and it was negative. I spoke with my local clinic at that time and was told that ectopic pregnancy was a possibility, because of the IUD. I did research on the internet and found that uterin or tubal pregnancy will show positive on a pregnancy test because of your hormone levels. I have no history of tubal pregnancy or anything of the sort. I have 2 children that were normal uterin pregnancies. I had my annual exam just a couple of months ago and everything tested fine.
So my question is, is a ectopic pregnany something I should be concerned about? I have none of the symptoms of a tubal pregnancy and I feel fine and normal. As I have none of the symptoms, I was opting to wait until my next sceduled period, and if I don't have it, go in for another exam. What are your opinions on this?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for you time and expertiese.
Sincerely, Jackie

Answer
HI Jackie,
I would not wait because even though you are not having symptoms, go ahead and go see your gyn and ask for a ultrasound to see if there is an ectopic pregnancy. If they won't do one as soon as  you leave there go to the ER and tell me you think you have an ectopic with an IUD and need an ultrasound, they will most likely do one to avoid lawsuits, if they don't go else where, you don't want to fool around with a possible ectopic.
