Dental Extraction & Antibiotics During Pregnancy: Safety & Timing

Question
Hello, Dr. Rappaport.

I had gone to see a dentist early in my first trimester, and she told me one of my molars needed to be extracted, there were possible signs of infection and it could spread.
Being an IVF patient, however, at the time I could not summon the courage for an extraction, under  anaesthesia followed by a course of antibiotics.  My OBGYN has said that it would be okay to get it done, but I am always worried about the effects of antibiotics on the baby.  I was hoping I could do this dental thing after the pregnancy.
However, I just read that microbes could travel to the baby through the placenta during the third trimester and harm the baby.

I am not sure what to do.

Thank you in advance for your advice, I have seen how completely and efficiently you answer everyone's questions and just want to let you know I appreciate your efforts very much.

Answer
If you need a tooth extraction during pregnancy, it must be done to avoid infection and lots of pain. It can safely be done during pregnancy and you can have novacaine and antibiotics (except tetracycle). YOu can have percocet for pain relief after the procedure. You cannot afford to wait until after you deliver because infection can compromise the health of the baby as well as yourself.
