Postpartum Perineal Tear Infection: Symptoms & What To Do

Question
I had my baby on April 23rd of this year.  I just went back to my Dr. at 5 weeks post partum to be examined.  I had tears that were sutured that were still very sensitive prior to the exam...Now, after the exam...my vagina is very sore and itching...and I am leaking a yellowy mucous...could my tears be infected?  What are some symptoms of infection in regard to perineal tears?  I didn't have this problem until after the exam this week.  Any advice would be helpful.

Answer
Usually, a post partum exam is performed at 6 weeks after the delivery. If you have an infection, you would have fever of over 101 degrees F or you would notice pus coming from the wound. Pus is usually green and foul smelling. The yellow discharge may merely be serum exuding from the tears, which is the normal healing process. You may be sensitive due to the examination. If it does not get better in a few days, go back and have the area checked.
