Understanding a Discrepancy in Early Pregnancy Scan Results

hi i went for my 12 week scan yesterday only trouble was that my womb measurd 12 weeks but the baby was only 6/5 weeks the nurse said that i might be having a silent misscarage. what does this mean because when i done the pregnancy test 12 weeks ago it was possative could i have become pregnant later on or that the baby is small i've had no pains or any bleeding. i've got to go back monday 24 of may for a nother scan and i worried sick can you please let me now what is happening thank you debbie

Hello Debbie. The nurse means that the baby stopped growing and died at the 5/6 week stage but has  not been shed from your uterus. The uterus has likely stretched bigger due to excess fluids collecting inside the uterus but the baby has not grown. The next scan will tell them whether there is a heart beat or not. You were indeed pregnant 12 weeks ago, but perhaps not now. If the baby has died, your dr will likely want to do a D&C to empty your uterus. I hope that answers your question- Cheri.
