Pregnancy Symptoms & Medroxyprogesterone: What's Happening?
QuestionHi,
I have been off birth control for just over a year, and my periods have come between 35-45 days ever since. My last period was on June 14. So, I'm now at day 45 and have yet to have my period. My breasts are sore, I have had unusual lower abdominal cramps for a week and a half, I'm tired, hungry and have had terrible mood swings. My pms is never this bad. ALthough my periods are irregular in timing, my pms symptoms are always the same. My husband and I have had unprotected sex several times this past month. I have taken two pregnancy tests over the last week and they have been negative. Concerned that something else could be wrong, i called my doctor yesterday. She was out of town but a nurse consulted another doctor who prescribed me medroxyprogesterone to spur a period. I think this is a little premature. What do you think? I don't plan on filling the prescription, and do you think I still could be pregnanct despite the negative tests? I think I ovulated around July 15th due to observations of my cervical mucus. My husband and I both feel that there is a very good chance that I am pregnant. Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks!
AnswerIf your last period started on June 14, and you beleive that you ovulated on July 15, then the best time to take a pregnancy test is 21 days after ovulation or on August 5. If the test is negative, in spite of symptoms such as breast tenderness, nausea, and fatigue, then I would suggest that you take two blood tests for pregnancy (Beta HCG) 48 hours apart. If there is a doubling of the results in 48 hours, it indicates a viable pregnancy. If there is a halving of the results in 48 hours, it indicates a miscarriage. If the results are both less than 5, it means you were never pregnant. If the test is negative, then I would agree with taking Provera (medroxyprogesterone) 10mg twice a day for five days and you should get your period within a week.
