Understanding Irregular Bleeding After Hypothyroidism Treatment
QuestionHi Dr. Harriet Johnson,
I am 22 years old and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism two months ago. A month ago blood work was done and my levels were back to normal. My last period was exactly 28 days and lasted for approximately 6 days. I have always had a little bit of spotting between my periods for approximately a day. However, this month on day 19 of my cycle I had more blood than usual. I knew it was not my period because it only lasted for a few hours. Slight cramping accompanied this blood as well. I am now 6 days late for my period. I have taken multiple pregnancy test and all have come back negative. For the past week I have been getting cramps and my back and breasts are sore. These are normal symptoms that I get before I get my period, but I haven't gotten my period yet. I know these symptoms are also associated with pregnancy. This is mine and my husband's first month trying to conceive and I am wondering if it is possible that I am pregnant?
AnswerHi Christina,
I think you may be pregnant. The bleeding you experienced could have been implantation bleeding. If the pregnancy hormones aren't yet strong enough, you won't get a positive test. I advise you to keep testing and if it continues to be negative and you don't get your period, visit your doctor for a more accurate blood test.
