i am 29..this is my fourth pregnancy due 4/19 currently 37 weeks.
i need some advice...i found out at my 37 week appointment Monday that my GBS test came back positive two weeks ago (wasn't told about it till i thought to ask cause i wanted to use the natural birthing suite at the hospital) doc didn't even explain what that meant to me seemed nonchalant about it and i had to find out by coming home and looking on internet for info. i do not have a lot of confidence in my doctor right now for various reasons...
so i thought i would try and ask a few questions i have here before my next appointment. A bit of history i have had 12 UTI's and kidney infections with this pregnancy last being diagnosed Monday..i have taken so many rounds of kelfex and macrobid it is ridicoulus..on keflex again for this one since i was on a continuous dose of macrobid once a day since 34 weeks. From what i read is it possible that the GBS is what is causing all the uti's and kidney infections?this is my fourth pregnancy and didn't have these problems with the other three but did have preE..that i escaped this time around till two weeks ago which so far has just been the elevated BP no protein that i am aware of being treated with bed rest.Cause of the PreE i was induced with the other three kids but this doctor wont discuss induction till I am over due a week. I don't know how fast my labors will be if i go naturally with the picotin used in the others the first was pretty long 18hrs, second was 6 hours, and third labor was only 3 hours...my concern is that if i go naturally and labor is short also that i wont get the 4 hours of antibiotics prior that i need in order for my daughter to be safe from the GBS...also taking into account i live in the boonies and it is an 45 minute drive to the hospital...So should i push my doctor to try inducing ahead of time so i have the safe time frame to get the antibiotics or not? Also really wondering about the uti's wouldn't the culters they do each time have shown that i had this? Thanks for any more information or opinions u may have.

There is no reason why you can't use the natural birthing suite at the hospital, even with a positive GBS culture. All that has to be done is that, when you arrive in labor, an I.V. will be started and you will get Penicillin through the I.V. YOu do not need a minimum of four hours of antibiotics in order for your baby to be safe from GBS. AS long as you get a little antibiotics on board, the baby will be safe. I'm surprised that you were never cultured for your UTIs during pregnancy, since you were given Keflex and Macrobid. Usually, if you complain of frequency, urgency, or burning on urination, a culture of your urine will be sent. That way, the bacteria that is causing the UTI can be identified and you can be given the correct antibiotic. If you had GBS in your urine, you would have been treated for that during the pregnancy. That is different than GBS in the vagina. We do not treat GBS if it is found in the vagina until you are in labor. AS long as you come to the hospital when you start to have contractions every 5 minutes, or if your water breaks, you will have nothing to worry about. Good Luck to you.

thank you doctor for your answer it really has helped put my mind at ease abit it is noce having an answer to my questions...if u dont mind i have one more ? to ask...with the uti's i never have had really a burning sensation just a lot of lower abdominal pain and pressure and frequent urination with backache... when my urine as tested this last time i had been having really more severe backache and contractions but not reguilar all last weekend and the presssure but attributed that to her being really low according to my doctor. So i expected to have a change in dialation i had been at a one for three weeks. But exam showed no more change and doctor said it was the UTI again causing the pain..anyways i have been taking the keflex since monday and the back pain is getting worse and constant..all there other labors the babies were sunny side up and i mostly had the back labor pains more then stomach pain contractions. How long do i give the Keflex to clear it up and ease the back pain before i start wondering is it labor or the UTI? The pain in my back kept me awake all night. i have tried hot water bottles, heating pads, tylonol and hot baths nothing is helping it and it hurts to laydown or sit up.
thanks again!
you are awsome to be spending your extra time doing this for women.Bless you.

AnswerI doubt that your back pain is caused, soley, by a UTI. It is probably due to the position of the baby or pressure of the baby on one of your nerves. The baby may, indeed, be sunny side up again and back labor can be a drag. Continue Tylenol, warm showers, back rubs, and a heating pad or hot water bottle on your back. There is really nothing else to do until you deliver.
