Lung Collapse in Pregnancy: Risks and Effects on Baby
QuestionI'm just wondering what would your lung collapsing during your nineth month of pregnancy of effect the baby. I mean would the baby be able to breathe if the mother couldn't.
AnswerThe baby does not breathe on its own until it takes a breath after it is delivered. Before then, it receives its oxygen through the umbilical cord. The blood from the mother travels to the baby and back to the mother through the placenta. If the mother's lung collapsed, the mother may have difficulty in breathing and can die. Certainly, if the mother dies, the baby will also die. If the mother cannot breathe, then oxygen cannot enter her lungs and the blood will be poor in oxygen. However, the baby does not breathe.
