Cesarean Recovery & Future Pregnancies: What You Need to Know

Question
I got a cesarean, I'm 20 years old I had my cesarean on January 28, 2005. Do I have to wait one year to get pregnant if I want to have my next child naturaly. I had a cesarean because they said it was best for my baby.

Answer
The recommendation os ACOG (The American College of ObGyn) is that, if you had a previous cesarean section within 18 months of again coming to term, yoo should have a repeat cesarean section. If, on the other hand, it is more than 18 months since the cesarean AND there are no other reasons to have a cesarean, yoo can safely try for a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). You understand that there is a 1% risk of uterine rupture at the site of the previous scar whenever you try to deliver vaginally after a cesarean. I would also suggest that you find out the reason they did the previous cesarean. There has to be a better reason than "it was best for your baby". Was it due to malposition, or fetal stress, or a non reassuring fetal tracing, or bleeding, or failure to progress in labor, or secondary arrest of dilatation, of failed descent of the baby? Ask for your chart and see what was written as the indication for the cesarean section. YOu should know this no matter which method of delivery you choose.  You can, however, become pregnant whenever you wish.
