Understanding HCG Levels: What Does a 9.2 Value Mean?
QuestionI went in two days ago for an HCG pregnancy blood draw (quantative) in order to determine if I was pregnant or not (because I was having an endometrial biopsy a few days later, and did not want to have this done if I was indeed pregnant). My doctor said my tests came back in the 'gray area', and that my HCG level at 9 Days Past Ovulation was 9.2. I had read/heard before that anything under 5 is considered negative, and just the same anything over 5 is positive. Can you please justify? I am going to wait things out a few more days, and if I don't get my period, I will use a home pregnancy test. I'm just confused as to what to think at the moment...and I most certainly don't want to get my hopes up if I am indeed not expecting.
AnswerYou should take two blood pregnancy tests 48 hours apart. If there is a doubling of the results in 48 hours, it indicates a viable pregnancy. If there is a halving of the results in 48 hours, it indicates a miscarriage. If both results are less than 5 it means that you are definitely not pregnant. A pregnancy test will not be accurate until 14-21 days after conception. The best time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after missing your period. If you are doubtful as to whether you are pregnant, postpone the biopsy until you have taken a pregnancy test at the correct time.
