High HCG Levels in Early Pregnancy: What Does It Mean?
QuestionThank you in anticipation of an answer.
Based on an ultra sound at 6 weeks 2 days gestation I am now 11 weeks 5 days. at 4 weeks and 1 day pregnant my HCG level was 1450 and 3 days later is was 3950. I had another blood test at 11 weeks and 2 days as I was worried something was not right. The results show HGC level of 38,400. My GP said it should be around 50,000 - 60,000 by now. I am due to have another HCG test at 12 weeks, 2 days gestation. I have also had a dull pain in my lower abdomen for about 5 days, which eases when I rest. I am concerned. I have read that HCG levels are not a good indication of healthy pregnancy after about 8 weeks gestation, can you please tell me what I should expect regarding HCG levels at my stage of pregnancy. My pregnancy symptoms eased off significantly 4 days ago, but I still have symptoms now but just not as strong as 4 days ago. I do not have a midwife yet but did have communication with one but she told me I can't be over 11 weeks pregnant because my HCG levels are too low. Please help.
AnswerDear Chrissy
I really wonder why your doctor keeps testing you for hCG level at 11 weeks pregnancy. The range of the normal level of hCG is extremely wide and has no clinical significance at all at this stage. Its only value if follow up if you have what is called gestational trophoblastic disease.
My advise is to have a vaginal ultrasound scan and if findings are Ok, then forget about this hcg thing.
Good Luck
